Traditional costume and the Heimatwerk

These are two terms which are anchored and inseparable connected with each other as a unit in the peoples’ mind for centuries. They stand for individual awareness of life with high claim to quality, for style, for good taste and timeless beauty. In Austria the Heimatwerk’s idea personifies decades of successful acting for folkloric- and every day culture in the tense atmosphere of tradition and zeitgeist.

It didn’t happen by chance that today in the area of the Alps we have such a vivid, diverse variety of traditional costume which a lot of other countries envy. It is a unique and cultural historic interesting phenomenon that, in memory of old folkloric traditional clothing, historic models are renewed over and over or rather a new traditional costume is worked out according to historic linings. In broad classes of society people wear these renewed traditional clothes with enthusiasm on workdays or celebratory occasions. It was not always that way. How did it come to this rejuvenation and what role do the Austrian Heimatwerke play?

Because of the limited data scale further contributions concerning the topic “traditional costume” can only be provided in German. Thanks for understanding.
